YAI Hosts Ice Cream Social for the Red Bank and
Brick Hill Neighborhoods of South Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND (August 21, 2008) — The Brick Hill and Red Bank neighborhoods of South Portland are regularly in the news but usually not for positive reasons.  These culturally diverse neighborhoods are home to many low income families and the South Portland police report high crime rates here.  For us at YAI, the families of Brick Hill and Red Bank are our neighbors, and in many cases, our friends.

So, in an effort to get to know our neighbors better, we are hosting an old fashioned, summer ice cream social.  We have printed flyers translated into different languages; French, Somali, and English, and posted them throughout the neighborhood.  We are hoping that families will come to get to know us.  We, in turn, will show them around our Family Center (La grande grange blanche, au sommet de Brick Hill!), and let them know what we do here and how we may be able to offer them support.

If you would like more information about our efforts to reach out to our neighbors, or to come to our ice cream social, give Jim Gemmell a call at 207-523-5014 or email at: jgemmell@yaimaine.org.
